Acne is a problem which effects millions of people. It
is a skin disorder which develops rash-like symptoms. It
can present as a single bump, several separate bumps, or
conjoined bumps. However it presents, acne can be very
upsetting for the person suffering from it. Acne is not
physically dangerous, however, it can be psychologically
dangerous. Acne can cause the sufferer to become
withdrawn from social situations. It can cause severe
anxiety and depression. The embarrassment of the
condition can have a serious effect on the person.
How is Acne Caused?
The body produces an oil called sebum. This oil is
secreted though the hair follicles or pores. The body
also sheds dead skin cells. If the body produces more
sebum than usual or shed skin cells too fast, or both, it is
possible for the pores or follicles to become clogged.
When this happens, acne is formed. There are a few
different types of acne. Blackheads for example, are one
type. This acne is formed when air hits the blockage as
the pimple is being formed. If the air does not hit the
blockage, usually, a whitehead will form.

No one can pinpoint the exact cause of each acne outbreak,
however, dermatologists do know the factors which cause acne
overall. The major reason for acne outbreaks are change
in hormone levels. This is why adolescents and teenagers
are the main group affected by acne. As a teenager goes
through puberty and up until young adulthood, their hormones
are constantly changing. This can cause the body to
produce more sebum or shed more skin cell, potentially causing
acne. Not only teenagers’ hormones change. A woman
during menstruation or right before, for example, is prone to
develop acne. Adult men can also develop
acne. Although it is more often see in teenagers, it is a
problem in adult men and women as well.
Certain medications can cause acne. Medications for
certain psychiatric disorders, medications for certain seizure
disorders, and certain medications with iodine in them are all
causes of acne.
There are also myths on what can cause acne. Many
people believe that there are certain foods that can cause
acne. Greasy foods such as french fries, pizza,
chocolate, and dark soft drinks are all usually blamed for acne
outbreaks. This is untrue. Food cannot cause acne
outbreaks.
